Tobrex is an ophthalmic medication in the eye drops form. The active ingredient of Tobrex eye drops is Tobramycin, a water-soluble antibiotic belonging to Aminoglycoside class. These eye drops are used to treat eye infections of its external parts and appendages.

- blepharoconjunctivitis;

- bacterial conjunctivitis;

- dacryocystitis;

- keratitis;

- keratoconjunctivitis;

- acute meibomianitis.

Tobrex eye drops are not used to treat viral or fungal eye infections.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Tobramycin is an ophthalmological anti-infective agent. It damages infective bacterial cells by inhibiting the synthesis of proteins within bacterium. With the decrease in bacteria population, the infection starts clearing up from the human body. Tobramycin is effective against aerobic gram-positive microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus); aerobic gram-negative microorganisms (Citrobacter species, Enterobacter species, Escherichia col, Klebsiella species, Morganella morganii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Providencia species, Serratis species).


Instill one or two drops into the treated eye(s) every 4 hours.

For severe infections: instill two drops into the treated eye(s) hourly until improvement.

Use eye drops for 7 days.


Tobrex eye drops are not intended for use in children under 1 year of age.

Tobrex sterile solution is for topical ophthalmic use only, not for injection.

Tobrex eye drops are associated with allergic reactions, even following a single dose. Discontinue using Tobrex immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.

Avoid contaminating the applicator tip with eye, fingers or another source.

Patients should not wear contact lenses while using Tobrex eye drops.

Remove contact lenses before using Tobrex eye drops.

Wash your hands before using the eye drops.

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose you should instill it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill a double dose to make up for a missed one.


If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.


Store at a cool temperature, away from excess moisture and heat. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children.

Side effects

The most common side effects associated with Tobrex eye drops are:

  • antibiotic-associated diarrhea
  • allergic reactions
  • tearing
  • swelling of the eye
  • itching
  • stinging
  • burning of the eye

Side effects occurrence does not only depend on the medication you are taking, but also on your overall health and other factors.


Tobrex eye drops are not for injection.

Do not use Tobrex eye drops if you are allergic to Tobramycin or other Aminoglycosides.

Do not use Tobrex eye drops if you are allergic to any ingredient comprised in Tobrex solution.

Do not use Tobrex eye drops if you have a history of severe allergic reactions associated with using antibiotics.

Do not use Tobrex eye drops if you are taking cephalosporin antibiotic (Ceftazidime) as it may decrease the effect of Tobramycin.

Discontinue using Tobrex eye drops immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.

Do not to use Tobrex eye drops if you are pregnant, plan to have a baby or are breastfeeding.
