Description

Toba® eye drops are manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries. These drops comprise Tobramycin as an active substance. This is a water-soluble antibiotic of Aminoglycoside class. Toba® eye drops are used treat bacterial infections of the external part of the eye and its appendages.

Indications:

- blepharitis;

- blepharoconjunctivitis;

- bacterial conjunctivitis;

- dacryocystitis;

- keratitis;

- keratoconjunctivitis;

- acute meibomianitis.

Toba® eye drops are not effective towards viral or fungal infections of the eyes.

MOA (mechanism of action):

Applied to the conjunctiva, Tobramycin acts as an anti-infective agent. It inhibits the bacterial synthesis, thereby destroying the infective cells and clearing up the infection from the body. Tobramycin is active against aerobic gram-positive microorganisms (Staphylococcus aureus); aerobic gram-negative microorganisms (Citrobacter species, Enterobacter species, Escherichia col, Klebsiella species, Morganella morganii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Providencia species, Serratis species).

Dosage

Instill one or two drops into the treated eye(s) every 4 hours.

For severe infections: instill two drops into the treated eye(s) hourly until improvement.

Use eye drops for 7 days.

Precautions

Do not use Toba® eye drops in children under 12 months of age.

Toba® eye drops are is for topical ophthalmic use only.

Toba® sterile solution is not for injection.

Toba® eye drops are associated with allergic reactions, even following a single dose. Discontinue using Toba® immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.

Avoid contaminating the applicator tip with eye, fingers or another source.

Patients should not wear contact lenses while using Toba® eye drops.

Remove contact lenses before using Toba® eye drops.

Wash your hands before using the eye drops.

Missing a dose

If you miss a dose you should instill it as soon as you remember about your missing. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

If an overdose occurs and you are not feeling well, stop taking the medication immediately. You should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Storage

Store at a cool temperature, away from excess moisture and heat. Avoid freezing of the reconstituted eye drops. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.

Side effects

The most common side effects associated with Toba® eye drops are:

  • antibiotic-associated diarrhea
  • allergic reactions
  • tearing
  • swelling of the eye
  • itching
  • stinging
  • burning of the eye

Side effects occurrence does not only depend on the medication you are taking, but also on your overall health and other factors.

Contraindications

Toba® eye drops are not for injection.

Do not use Toba® eye drops if you are allergic to Tobramycin or other Aminoglycosides.

Do not use Toba® eye drops if you are allergic to any ingredient comprised in Toba® eye drops.

Do not use Toba® eye drops if you have a history of severe allergic reactions associated with using antibiotics.

Do not use Toba® eye drops if you are taking cephalosporin antibiotic (Ceftazidime) as it may decrease the effect of Tobramycin.

Discontinue using Toba® eye drops immediately and contact your physician at the first sign of a rash or allergic reaction.

Do not to use Toba® eye drops if you are pregnant, plan to have a baby or are breastfeeding.
